Infinity pool facing the ocean

A sheet of water that melts into the horizon, below a hotel on the Basque coast.

Design, fabrication and construction of the pool

Overview

  • Long outdoor infinity pool facing the ocean at nightfall, pale stone deck, sun loungers and lit lanterns.
Infinity-edge pool facing the ocean, at blue hour.

The project

The hotel wanted a pool that looks at the ocean, not at the car park. The pool stretches along the upper terrace, edge to edge with the drop, and the water spills over its whole length on the sea side. From the rooms as from the sunbeds, the surface runs on to the horizon.

The constraints

Wind and salt spray attack everything they touch, and the terrace sits on made-up ground with a slope. The overflow lip had to stay level to the millimetre over twenty-four metres, and the hotel could not close for more than one quiet season.

What we did

We cast the pool and its channel in one piece, with a buried balance tank under the terrace, out of sight. Materials were chosen for sea air: stainless steel fixings, glass-paste mosaic lining, a ventilated plant room. The works were phased so the terrace reopened before summer.
