Saltwater lagoon in the dunes

A free-form saltwater lagoon, lit from the floor at night, among the dunes of Comporta.

Design, fabrication and construction of the lagoon and its lighting

Overview

  • Organically shaped pool edged with pale stone, green water lit from below, dunes, umbrella pines, a timber boardwalk and the ocean at dusk.
Lagoon with curved pale stone banks among dunes and umbrella pines, floor lit at nightfall.

The project

On a private estate on the Portuguese coast, the lagoon follows the curves of the dunes. The salt water, soft on the skin, changes colour through the day, and at night the floor lights up to draw reflections on the reeds.

The constraints

Sand shifts, the water table is high, and salt attacks ordinary metals. Each light point in the floor has to stay watertight and reachable without emptying the pool.

What we did

The lagoon is cast on an anchored slab, with a pearl-grey reinforced lining that follows the curves. Salt electrolysis is sized for the volume, materials are corrosion-proof, and a technical gallery gives access to the lights from below.
