Patio pool and hammam beneath a dome

A small pool in the shade of a patio and a hammam under a dome, in a guesthouse in Marrakech.

Design and construction of the pool and hammam

Overview

  • Courtyard of a traditional house, rectangular pool in pale jade zellige surrounded by arches, potted orange trees and cedar doors.
Courtyard pool lined with pale jade zellige, carved arches and orange trees.

The project

In a guesthouse in the medina, the patio shelters a square pool surrounded by zellige tiles, and the hammam occupies a vaulted room in tadelakt. In the evening the water reflects the lanterns and birdsong covers the city.

The constraints

The patio is narrow and access is through alleys where only a hand cart can pass. Local craftsmen work lime and tadelakt, which have to be made watertight and compatible with steam.

What we did

We prepared the technical elements in the workshop and sent a small team that works with master craftsmen from Marrakech. The hammam is waterproofed beneath the tadelakt, the dome is ventilated at the top, and the pool water is filtered by a discreet room under the staircase.
