Heated pool in midwinter, at 1,700 metres

An outdoor pool open all winter, in the snow, facing the Pyrenean peaks.

Design, fabrication and construction of the outdoor pool

Overview

  • Stone-edged outdoor pool under snow, steam drifting over the water, a lit stone and timber chalet, snowy mountains at dusk.
Heated outdoor pool under the snow, steam on the water, Pyrenean peaks at blue hour.

The project

A mountain hotel wanted its guests to swim outdoors in January, facing the peaks. We built a heated stainless steel outdoor pool, covered at night, whose steam rises into the cold air at dawn.

The constraints

At this altitude the air falls below zero and snow builds up: hot water has to stay hot, nothing may freeze, and the structure must withstand freeze-thaw cycles. Winter access is sometimes difficult.

What we did

The pool is insulated all round, covered at night by an insulating cover, and its circuit can be drained. The plant room is buried below the frost line, and heat is recovered from the drain water. Works were carried out in the fine season.
