Swim lane beneath the pines

A long, narrow pool made for swimming, slipped between the pines of a residence in Hossegor.

Design and construction of the swim lane

Overview

  • Long narrow lap pool between two pale stone decks, tall maritime pines on one side, a dark timber contemporary villa on the other.
Lap pool among the pines, timber and concrete villa, Landes coast.

The project

The owners swim every morning. Rather than a bathing pool, they asked for a swim lane: twenty metres long, three wide, edged with a timber terrace and set among the pines without felling a single one.

The constraints

Pine roots rule out any wide excavation, and the sandy soil of the Landes calls for careful retaining. The pool had to swim straight, with a steady current and no turbulence.

What we did

We dug by hand near the roots and chose a thin-walled reinforced vessel stiffened by ground beams. A counter-current unit equips one end, and the pearl-grey lining echoes the colour of the bark.
